5k Handicap

This is a friendly club 5k handicap race starting and finishing at Gosling Sports Centre, and will be held on a weeknight training session towards the end of each month.

The route follows a traffic free, safe and accurate 5k course that follows the cycle path down to Stanborough lakes and back again finishing on the grass next to the golf centre.

The first runners start being set off from 6:30pm, and so it's advised that runners are warmed up and ready to run by then. Runners must wear a race number of their choosing.

The runner's start times are calculated from the last time that they ran in this 5k series. The runners are started in order with the slowest first, followed by the rest according to their estimated time.

All runners must enter the event before the day of the handicap, by simply notifying the organisers that they intend to run, or, if they haven't competed before, by submitting an estimated time. There are no entries on the night, due to the start times and the order of the runners having to be calculated in advance. There are no exceptions.

If a runner has not competed before, their start time is calculated from an estimated time submitted by them to the organisers. These are called "scratch runners", and they are not eligible to score points or have their time count in the main competition due to the varying nature of estimated times. When a scratch runner returns for a 2nd time they run from their first actual time and compete in the main competition.

The winner is the first person (non scratch runner) to finish, and therefore is the person that has improved the most from the last time they ran.

Points are awarded to all non scratch runners who race. Points are firstly given to runners based on their finish position. If there are 35 runners in the race, then the 1st runner will recieve 35 points, the 2nd will recieve 34 points, etc, with the last finisher receiving 1 point. Secondly, bonus points are awarded. 5 points if you improved from your last time, and a further 10 points if you set a P.B. (based on your times from this handicap series).

Results will be posted on the forum, here and sent out by email to club members.

Please use this email address to notify the organisers of your intention to run.
